As they situated the new patient in the care unit at the base, Keilani couldnât hold back her tears. It was one thing for someone to come after her, but anyone who could harm an innocent dolphin was a monster. Micah was watching her, so she fought to get it under control. This little guy needed her help.
She uttered a quiet prayer as she ran her hands along the dolphinâs sleek form, careful not to cause him any additional pain.
Micah watched silently while she prayed over the dolphin. His voice was quiet with what she could only label reverence when she finished. âDo you think heâs going to be okay? Can you get him back to health?â
âWe.â She turned to him. âI think we can. I need your help.â
Xavier and Emmett had helped them get the sea mammal settled, but once they were sure there was nothing more they could do, the pair went to complete reports on the dayâs misadventure.
She began to give instructions, even as she assessed the mammalâs wounds. They soon had him sedated and on IV fluids, with several monitors extending from his form to keep tabs on his vitals. He had apparently been restrained and abused, his wounds indicative of someoneâs anger. It was a wonder the poor guy trusted any humans to get near him. That fact alone was a testament to his weakened condition and the pain he was suffering.
Keilani began by giving him something for the pain and treating the external wounds, but the damage went below the surface. She used the sonogram machine next to determine how extensive the internal injuries were. After a thorough examination with the device, she declared him very fortunate.
âIt doesnât appear to have caused him any major trauma to his internal organs. We should be able to see him healthy again in a week or so.â She gave Micah a teary look.
âThis isnât your fault, Keilani.â He put a hand on her shoulder.
âOf course it is. Itâs a message. Someone wants me to back off.â She turned away.
âYou canât blame yourself. These menâtheyâre just ruthless. And besides, youâre going to help him.â His expression brooked no argument.
Keilani nodded. âHeâs going to be okay. But he should never have had to go through this.â
âThatâs true, but one thing SEAL life has taught me is that there are evil men in the world and we canât shoulder the responsibility for their actions. Their choices are sometimes intolerable, but those choices are theirs alone. All we can do is try to prevent them from hurting anyone or anything else the best we can.â The steely-jawed expression she was becoming familiar with was back on his face. âAnd what you can do is help me make sure they are caught so this never happens again.â
She could only nod at him in reply. Her throat was too thick with emotion to squeeze any words past.
They continued to work with the dolphin, named Gus, for another couple of hours without a break.
